Chipping Norton
Chipping Norton’s famous history and its stunning views of surrounding valleys make it a must-see town during your Cotswolds break.
Thousands of visitors to the Cotswolds area make a point of viewing the many interesting 17th and 18th century buildings. But the famous town really made its name, and its money, during medieval times as the centre of the English wool trade.
New technologies in the textile trade that marked the start of the industrial revolution helped Chipping Norton to amass even more fame and fortune as the commercial centre for the Evenlode Valley. Bliss Mill with its distinctive towering chimney epitomized this glory period for the town. The mill finally closed in 1980 but has now been restored to some of its former glory as highly attractive apartment accommodation.
Chipping Norton, known as the gateway to the Northern Cotswolds, makes an ideal day trip from The Bell at Charlbury at under 30 minutes away. Using The Bell as your Chipping Norton accommodation allows you to explore the highest town in Oxfordshire at your leisure - and with little hassle. We can even prepare you a sumptuous packed lunch to take with you on your Chipping Norton trip.
On the way back from your Chipping Norton break, pop in to the Station Mill Antiques Centre situated on the outskirts of the town. Established in 1997, the centre offers a huge array of stock from over 70 antiques dealers on its 11,000 sq ft of floor space. The vast selection of antiques and collectables include furniture, barometers, clocks and even firearms.
Station Mill Antiques Centre is open from 10am to 5pm seven days a week and parking at its Station Road location is free. You can even stop for a cup of tea at the Cornflower Tea Room before driving back to your hotel.
