Burford
The little Oxfordshire town of Burford is reputed to be one of the most photographed towns in Britain - and with good reason. Lying about 20 miles west of Oxford this picturesque tourist venue features some of the most ancient buildings to be found in the area.
The Norman parish church dates back to the 15th century and was even used as a prison in 1649 during the English Civil War. When visiting the church, you can still see the carvings left by some of the prisoners of war.
Between the 14th and 18th Century Burford really came into its own for its role in the wood trade, in common with so many Cotswolds towns. 
The Tolsey situated in the middle of Burford High Street was once the hub of the town’s wool trade and is now home to a small but fascinating museum.
The name of this quintisentially English town comes from the old English words “burh” meaning fortified town or hilltown and “ford” meaning shallow river.
